I’m a hard maybe. I’m very interested but there are a lot of questions to answer... mostly about fixing the Mini.

My new suspension bits won’t be here until next week, and who knows how long it’ll take me to figure out how to fit them. Hopefully only a couple of days, but I’m not optimistic. If I can’t get it going, it might be too depressing and I might end up at Road America. Maybe. Who knows.

As an aside, if I do bring the Mini I would either have to abandon it in Barrington or drive down to Pontiac on side roads due to the 55ish cruising speed. I really don’t want to abandon it... but I want to take it to Supercar Saturday. Hm.

To top it off, all of this is weather-dependent since the Mini doesn’t get driven in the rain!

The Mini will (at best) be poorly tuned and pretty much un-tested. That’d be a scary couple-hundred miles.

I was looking last night at what parts under the hood I haven’t touched yet in the last two months. Here’s what I came up with:

- bottom half of the engine

- wiper motor

- brake servo

Uh, that’s about it. Everything from the wiper motor to the horn to the clutch to the carb to the exhaust to the suspension to the radiator to the dashboard has been taken apart since Memorial Day. That’s not everything, either.

It should be nice when it’s done, but holy cow do I not want to get stuck 100 miles from home. Mr. Lehto might be able to put that Explorer to use with a tow dolly.

I vote going to for the middle of the country. Winnipeg’s not that bad a place (and only 3 hours away, unlike everywhere else in Canada)

Unfortunately I’m going to have to sit this one out. The Lada’s already signed up for the LeMons Rally, which while doable (getting from Chicago to Monterrey in a week) unfortunately is more than I can take off work at once. I might be able to get away with something in the fall, but two summer trips in opposite directions isn’t going to be possible.

Winnepeg is a 2000km drive for me, I would say Toronto/Central Ontario. There seems to be a large number of people on here in around that area. It also not far from the border too: 3 hrs Sarnia - Toronto, 3.5 hrs Windsor - Toronto, 1.5 hrs Niagara Falls - Toronto, 4.5 hrs Cornwall - Toronto.

Toronto is a 2500 km drive for me, and while I’d be willing to hammer that out, for someone in Vancouver, it’s 4500km. Winnipeg is actually right in the middle of the country (like 20km west of the central meridian) and makes far more sense. It’s right around the 25-hour drive mark from both Montreal and Vancouver, and within a day’s drive of Calgary and Edmonton as well. Central Ontario is an armpit, and it would do you guys good to get out and see a bit more of the country.

Well, I’ll give you that Manitoba’s roads are mostly only good for seeing how straight your car tracks, although there are a handful of nice drives, along with the benefit of reasonable speed limits. As far as beautiful scenery goes, meh. Any place without people is going to be pretty awesome.
